Photo of young scholar at a community technology center



















Last week a young scholar visited the computer center where I work. This first grader found all the computers in the center taken by other students, so she spontaneously took out this book, grabbed a piece of scrap paper, and started copying the Chinese characters. My co-worker from Japan, Shuko, tells me that her handwriting is much better than that of most Asian students.

I knew I had to take a photo of this special moment. I shared several copies of the photo with the family of this scholar. I also wanted to share this photo with Toni Stone, who would smile upon the spontaneity and playfulness of this creative act -- and the excellence with which it was performed.
